Green Mountain Knitting Bags

July 9,

Greetings! Hope everyone had a fun holiday weekend. Somehow we managed to get our parade in, but right afterwards... it poured! That seems to be the theme this summer. But the parade was great, and the used book sale at the town hall never disappoints! They had started to set the books up a day early, so right after our yoga class on Friday morning we were able to get first dibs... but of course went back after the parade and added to our lot. So rain showers on and off throughout the day, but it cleared for our fantastic fireworks! I love the fourth, second only to Halloween~

You may have noticed three styles missing from the line-up, these are now available only through custom order. See the 'About The Bags' link. It was a busy week with the fourth, and my sister made a trip over from Maine to have some time with our mom whose memory is getting worse. So they were here visiting on Tuesday, and my sister and I visited this morning to figure out our next step, then she headed back to Maine. All good things, but between that and another custom bag... well, I'm happy to be able to offer what I can tonight.

I made up my jam and found the Pamona Pectin to be wonderful! Of course I started it at 9:30 at night, and finished up around midnight... once a night owl always a night owl, but I do enjoy that time. I used honey, and the flavor is so nice, not too sweet. Next up... raspberry!

On the way home from errands the other day, I stopped at a yard sale and found three vintage aprons (to add to my collection in various spots around my kitchen).... funny as a friend had just sent me the 'apron story'.... see below.

So we head out of town Saturday morning right at 6:00 am (egads) to make an afternoon wedding on Long Island, overnight there, then off to Maine!!!! It's our annual week on Snow Pond in the same little old camp we have every summer. Like the good knitter that I am, my knitting is all planned and mostly packed. Clothes? Oh right..... secondary ;)

So. have a great week. All bags purchased with completed payments by tomorrow at noon will be sent out before I go. We return a week from Saturday on July 18 and will be back on track with the bags on the 23rd.

So, I'm so excited to catch op on sleep, knitting and reading. Swimming and canoeing too... and jigsaw puzzles, and poker on the porch, and dock sitting, and swimming to the raft.... and the floatilla to the island, and bass... and the chipmunk highway... laying pennies on the track.... walking to Marcella's antique shop, and the sweet smell of the old camp.

Take good care of yourselves good women, and knit on!

Martha.

Aprons ***
{ ANYONE REMEMBER THEM ?? }

The
History of 'APRONS' !!

I don't
think our kids know,
what an apron is.

The
principal use of Grandma's apron was to protect
the dress underneath, because she only had a
few,it was easier to wash aprons than dresses
and they used less material, but along with
that, it served as a potholder for removing
hot pans from the oven.

It was
wonderful for drying children's tears, and on
occasion was even used for cleaning out dirty
ears.

From the
chicken coop, the apron was used for carrying
eggs, fussy chicks, and sometimes half-hatched
eggs to be finished in the warming
oven.

When
company came, those aprons were ideal hiding
places for shy kids.

And when
the weather was cold, grandma wrapped it around
her arms.

Those big
old aprons wiped many a perspiring brow, bent
over the hot wood stove.

Chips and
kindling wood were brought into the kitchen in
that apron.

From the
garden, it carried all sorts of vegetables.
After the peas had been shelled, it carried out
the hulls.

In the
fall, the apron was used to bring in apples that
had fallen from the trees.

When
unexpected company drove up the road, it was
surprising how much furniture that old apron
could dust in a matter of seconds.

When
dinner was ready, Grandma walked out onto the
porch, waved her apron, and the men knew it was
time to come in from the fields to
dinner.

It will be
a long time before someone invents something
that will replace that 'old-time apron' that
served so many purposes.

REMEMBER:

Grandma
used to set her hot baked apple pies
on the window sill to cool.

Her
granddaughters set theirs
on the window sill to
thaw.

They would
go crazy now trying to figure
out how many germs
were on that apron.

* I don't think I ever caught anything from an apron !!!! *
